Gravesend Transport Quarter
Martha Covell was appointed planning consultant by Burns + Nice for this significant regeneration project. Martha prepared and submitted the planning application (including planning statement and design and access statement) and negotiated with major consultees on behalf of the client, Gravesham Borough Council, to secure planning permission within 13 weeks of submission. The planning permission will enable the implementation of the Gravesend Transport Quarter Master Plan, a multi-million pound regeneration project funded by the public and private sectors.
Gravesend is located on the Thames Estuary, east of Greater London, within north west Kent. It has historically been an important staging post: most of its trade revolved around the river Thames. Whilst still a thriving town, the built environment has suffered from bombing during WW2 and inappropriate post-war development.
Located in Gravesend town centre, Gravesend Transport Quarter is centred around the railway station and Civic Centre. In 2009 the Gravesend Transport Quarter contained
• Poor quality public realm
• Large central sites which were underutilised
• A traffic-dominated pedestrian environment
• Underused and poorly designed open spaces
